At the toddler in the pushchair, looking quite forlorn at the pattern of Smarties sprinkled across the cobblestones of the market.
A communal " Ooooooh...." and a hush before the expected wailing.
Nothing of the kind.
Mum picked up the transparent car-shaped container - empty by now - and, with a last glance at its cargo, they walked on
I would have thought that the 5-second rule would have applied...

cute photo, but sad story...
What a great photo, John! The contrast of round, colorful candy against the square, grey stone is wonderful!
I, too, am surprised the child didn't scream, by the way. Very unusual!
I have always thought the 5 second rule applies only to indoor floors only. I could be wrong. Cute photo, very colorful, sorry for the child's loss. The Toddler may have learned a good lesson about gravity. ;-)
this happened to me once before, when i was knee high. i had a large tube of rowntrees spilt all over the dusty grey cement ground. i felt so upset about it yet i knew it was my fault so i couldn't complain or cry. geez, my emotions at that time was so complex that it still strikes me so vividly.
I myself just used the 5-second rule Friday at lunch when one of my grapes decided to fly off the table. I grabbed it and rolled it gently across a paper towel, then popped it into my mouth. Delicious.
arrghh. wasted sweets! :-p
